Meeshali Patel Mr. Brennan AP Psychology 19 August 2012 AP Psychology Essay How essential is memory to us? Why is this term highly verifying to people in the world? Memory is a being’s power to remember things and retain information from the past. Human beings are encountered by this process of remembrance for eternity- throughout their lifetime. It is a key element for an individual, which doesn’t have an authentic origin. Memories can be portrayed in many unique ways, such as emotionally, spiritually or mentally. A person may have memories of dead loved ones, childhood; life experiences etc, there is no closing stage to the various types of memories, a being might stumble upon. However, memories can also come across our brain as†¦show more content†¦Unsophisticatedly, I thought how can this be true? But, after taking into consideration of the mind changing quote of Proust, changed my opinion about the dishonesty of memory. â€Å"A memory is only as real as the last time you remembered it. The more you remember something the less a ccurate the memory becomes.† An extraordinary experiment done by many intelligent scientists demonstrates this act of remembering. The experiment that was held, conditioned rats to associate a loud noise with a mild electrical shock, the scientists made sure that the shock had a strong memory associating the shock with the noise. The scientists wanted the rats to recoil in fear whenever the sound was played. They let this memory congeal for forty-five days, and then re-exposed the rats to the scary noise and injected a protein inhibitor to their brain. However, while conducting this experiment, they made a mistake, which was that they injected the noxious chemical at the same time, when the rats were recalling what the noise meant. What they did wrong, was that instead of interrupting the process of making a memory, they interrupted the process of â€Å"remembering† a memory. Therefore, their results were affected by this mistake, because after the poison is out of thei r cells, the rats were supposed to remember the fear.
